WHAT IS GO GAY DC?

Go Gay DC is an exciting grassroots movement that brings inclusive LGBTQ+ community spirit to locals and visitors to the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia area (DMV). Gay life is much more than apps and bars; it's about authentic human connection through an active social, professional, and cultural life. Go Gay DC fills that void. Through its fun activities, Go Gay DC celebrates the vibrancy of the nation's capital. It's the newest sensation focused on friendship, leadership, and service. 

WHO IS This FOR?

Go Gay DC is for Washington, DC-area gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning and others (LGBTQ+) and anyone who affirms people born this way. Go Gay DC connects you with the local LGBTQ+ community so you can stay informed and meet new people, including those in Virginia and Maryland. It's a diverse, intergenerational mix, from college students, busy professionals to next-chapter adventurers. Go Gay DC empowers you to be your authentic self.

HOW IS IT UNIQUE? 

Designed as a civic booster club, Go Gay DC was founded in 2008 by TJ Flavell on the Meetup platform. Since then it has organically blossomed into a dynamic community hub, a powerhouse that now reaches over 10K LGBTQ+ folk and is growing fast. It is now managed under the auspices of Brighter World Digital, a boutique, community-spirited digital agency.

IS GO GAY DC QUEER-FRIENDLY?

Yes, absolutely! Use of the word gay in Go Gay DC is as a broad umbrella term that pays homage to civil rights pioneer Frank Kameny, who articulated that being gay is a positive identity, coining the slogan "Gay is Good" in 1968 as a parallel to the Black Power slogan "Black is Beautiful." His activism was grounded in the principle that being gay is a social good and positive for individuals and society. Go Gay DC welcomes everyone under the rainbow, including contemporary queers. Together, we are breaking down silos and building a stronger community.

In addition to attending events, volunteering as a Go Gay DC Ambassador is a fantastic opportunity to grow your network and to meet fabulous people. The more reliable event hosts we have, the more fun events we can schedule.
